Magnolia Electric Co. live @ Zaphod’s on Flickr.
almost five and a half years ago, Jason Molina and Magnolia Electric Co. took to the stage at Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa. And it was amazing.
I was already a fan of Songs: Ohia since 2001, but seeing him perform live reinvigorated my love for his music. I remember being really saddened when i heard that a couple months after this performance, the bassist Evan Farrell died of smoke inhalation in his apartment.
I remember when “Josephine” came out in 2009, and how it was dedicated to Evan, and what a beautiful album it was. I bought it on vinyl, and it was my favourite album of the year. I still listen to it. I was listening to it just yesterday.
And now Jason Molina is gone. Passed away on Saturday, his body finally giving away from years of alcohol abuse. And 39 is too young to die (no matter who you are; famous songwriter or nobody). I will be 39 in a couple of years. I am not old. I am just very sad.
Peace, Molina. You were a great influence. And if your life haunted and pained you, well you still managed to touch so many people in such a positive way; I hope you got pleasure from it.
